Poetry

We all write poetry for many different reasons. You may write it as an escape, or to clear your head. Or you may just write it as a way to relax, Whatever it is, there are so many people in the world, including our school that write poetry. Poetry is a release of something previously unknown into the world. Once you start writing, you begin to write out everything you’ve been meaning to say, with words you didn’t know you needed. Writing a poetry is agreeing to risk putting a piece of your soul on paper. It allows you to share your story in a unique way, but you have to be brave enough to give your heart for someone else to read. Anyway you share your voice is powerful, but poetry has a profound impact on individuals and the world.

A senior at Norwalk High School says she writes poetry because it helps her release her emotions in a positive way that doesn't affect others. Sometimes your emotions can be something you're not proud of, or hurtful. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I know we all feel that way in some way or another. Anonymously, she has written a poem and is allowing us to share it:

Seraphim

Sara, Sara, where have you gone?

6 feet under, free as a bird,

The only voice I wish I'd heard.

At the edge of the world,

At the edge of my heart,

I bend and tear when we're apart.

I'm flying now,

Over the herd.

I'm floating now,

I wish I'd been heard.

Crying now,

Tears of joy.

Lying now,

You've left a void.

Senior Aaron Adams says he writes poetry to express himself and his thoughts in a creative way. It can also help him challenge his writing skills. He says poetry definitely helps him cope with what's going on around him because it gives him a platform to just vent his feelings through writing.

Lastly, a sophomore says she writes poetry to help her cope with death, bullying, and nearly everything else going on around her. She says that poetry is the first thing she turns to when she needs to get things off their mind. She has a poem from her poetry book that reads:

Blood is black,

Teeth are white

SInce the day you left

I’ve been completely colorblind.

I thought I was over you until someone asked me,

“If you had one wish, what would it be?”

And my first thought was to waste that wish on you.

Poetry is different than all other kinds of writing. Beautiful and honest, poetry acts as a window into someone’s innermost emotions. From famous poets to fellow classmates, poetry has changed the world for the better.
