Sleeping is everyone’s favorite thing to do, and yet we get barely any of it. More sleep can help you stay sick less often, reduce stress, put you in a good mood, and lower your risk for health problems. No wonder we love it! It’s one of the most important things in your life that maintains good physical health. Why aren’t we getting enough sleep though?
Technology is a key factor when it comes down to not getting enough sleep. The more electronics a person uses before bed, the less likely they are to fall asleep. Everyone knows this, but not enough people actually put their phone down an hour or two before bed. Caffeine is also a factor that is popular in not getting enough sleep. Even drinking caffeine up to 6 hours before you go to bed can affect how long you sleep. Stop drinking that coffee or that pop, you need sleep more! A big reason teens don’t sleep well, is because of stress and insomnia that comes with it. Whether it be school, work, family, or sports most people have something to stress about.
So how do we get enough sleep when there are so many factors that keep us awake at night? There are many tips to get more sleep, including these:
1. Dim phone or computer screen brightness, or turn it to night mode. This way the bright or blue lights don’t keep your eyes wide open and fully awake
2. Turn your phone on do not disturb. This way you will not hear or see any notifications that can distract you from trying to go to sleep
3. Be tech-free an hour before you go to sleep. There are many other things you may do, including talking with your family, reading a book, or yoga
4. Stop your caffeine intake 4-6 hours before you go to bed. This way the caffeine will be done affecting your brain making you awake.
5. Replace your coffee or pop with high energy foods. You don’t have to have the caffeine in order to have energy
6. Take a hot bath or shower to destress. Taking a bath is very relaxing and you get to enjoy time by yourself.
7. Do yoga or meditate. Yoga and meditation both really focus on your breathing, and both can be done in a dark room. Check on my article “The World of Yogis” to learn more about yoga!
As teenagers, sleep is VERY important to us, and we are pros at taking naps, resting our heads on desks, and waking up late, not making it to school on time. These tips on how to stay off technology, avoid caffeine, and distress will solve all of your sleeping problems! You’ll feel energized and good as new, as everyone should.
